Yesterday, the Republican Senate voted to acquit President Trump without a full review of the case against him and without hearing any witness testimony.

During my 20-year Navy career and in Congress, I swore an oath to defend our Constitution against all enemies foreign and domestic. In December, I voted for the president's impeachment, fully aware that my decision could cost me my seat in Congress.

It is unconscionable that Republicans in the Senate chose to put partisan loyalty before the oaths they swore to support and defend our Constitution.

Many Republican Senators have acknowledged the president's guilt, and their decision not to hold him accountable doesn't change the facts: Donald Trump put his own personal gain before the interests of our country. He put our national security at risk, and he undermined the integrity of our democracy to further his own election.

This is a somber moment in our nation's history. But while I am in Congress, I will continue defending our Constitution and serving as a check on this administration's reckless behavior.

That is my promise to you.

Sincerely,

Elaine Luria
Congresswoman, VA-02

P.S. Republicans in the Senate have abandoned their Constitutional responsibility to serve as a check on the executive branch. If you believe it's important to preserve our Democratic majority in the House, I'm asking you to make a donation to help us hold this crucial battleground district >>
