Moments ago, I vetoed the GOP’s extremist abortion ban.

As your governor, I have always sworn to do everything I can to defend reproductive rights. I am proud to once again uphold that promise today.

John, this legislation is wrong for our state, dangerous for women, and a direct assault on our most personal freedoms. It must not be allowed to stand.

But right-wing attacks on our freedoms won’t end with my veto.

Despite the will of the majority of North Carolinians, the GOP plans to hold override votes and to take any other action necessary to end abortion access in our state.

Securing reproductive rights for North Carolinians will come down to future elections. I’m already hard at work supporting pro-choice candidates — Democrats who we can depend on to fight for us.
