Senator Hassan said I could reach out because yesterday, I voted to convict Donald Trump on both charges brought against him by Congress, and we could really use your help.
I'm already in the middle of a tough re-election campaign, but that didn't cross my mind when I weighed the evidence in the trial according to my Constitutional oaths.
Just like folks in New Hampshire are counting on Senator Hassan, I know the people of Alabama are counting on me to do the right thing. My vote isn’t going to make Mitch McConnell or Donald Trump happy, though. And they're already coming after me for it. One group spent a half a million dollars last week, and more is on the way.
The evidence clearly proves that Donald Trump coerced a foreign government to interfere in our election for his personal political benefit, placing his personal interest above our national interests. I also believe that the president deliberately obstructed Congress by blocking testimony from witnesses and the production of documents during the course of the investigation. This is unacceptable, but it didn't seem to bother Mitch McConnell.
The stakes are historically high, but to Mitch McConnell and his enablers in Washington, no tactics are off-limits.
That's not how I operate. I will continue working hard in the Senate for what's right — defending our health care, civil rights, and equality — but I can't do it alone.
