Friend, On President Biden’s first day in office, he rolled back key border security policies that stopped illegal immigration and kept our border secure – sending a signal to illegal immigrants and drug cartels that they could exploit vulnerabilities at our border, and they have. This week, the border crisis went from bad to worse as the Biden Administration allowed Title 42 – a Trump-era border policy that enabled Border Patrol to more quickly expel illegal immigrants – to expire without a mitigation plan to address the surge of illegal immigration. The consequences have been horrific – over 67,000 apprehensions, over 15,700 "gotaways," and 56 pounds of fentanyl seized this week alone. As Americans watched the situation at our border deteriorate in real time this week, the Biden Administration did absolutely nothing. By contrast, House Republicans passed the Secure the Border Act – a conservative border security package to meaningfully address this devastating humanitarian and safety crisis. This bill: Secures our border: Forces the Biden Administration to restart border wall construction and provides Border Patrol agents with detection technology as a force multiplier. It also increases the number of Border Patrol agents and provides them with well-deserved bonus pay. Combats illegal immigration: Focuses on ending the Biden Administration’s practice of catch-and-release. It also closes loopholes in the asylum process and strengthens protections against human trafficking. Securing our border is mission critical – I will continue to support legislation that will do so, while pushing back against the Biden Administration's devastating border policies. Best, Hearing From Iowans Benton County Law Enforcement Roundtable I hosted a roundtable with Benton County law enforcement to hear about public safety concerns, including the influx of fentanyl coming across the border and the importance of improving mental health care support. Meskwaki Settlement School I toured the Meskwaki Settlement School and had the opportunity to visit with staff and students. The incredible faculty is preparing students for success and preserving Meskwaki traditions in their curriculum! Hotel Grinnell I toured the beautiful Hotel Grinnell and met with local leaders to discuss Grinnell’s growing tourism economy. Grinnell was recently recognized as one of the best small towns in America. It's great to see Grinnell continuing to thrive! Preventing Stillbirth It was heart wrenching to speak with women who have endured stillbirth, the loss of a baby before or during delivery. Out of this pain, they have found purpose – preventing the tragedy of stillbirth from happening to other families. I am proud to work with these brave advocates to ensure expecting moms have access to care so that we can end stillbirth and save lives. Greater Des Moines Partnership I enjoyed seeing so many familiar faces while the Greater Des Moines Partnership was in DC this week! I appreciated the opportunity to share more about how we’re working to deliver for Iowans – especially with the upcoming Farm Bill – in Congress. Fuel Iowa I met with Fuel Iowa this week to discuss issues facing family-owned fuel retailers across our state. We discussed the importance of unleashing American energy resources, including Iowa biofuels, to save families money at the pump. Iowa Donor Network The Iowa Donor Network connects donors with Iowans who need a transplant. It was great to meet with the team to hear how we can support their life-saving mission! Iowa Association of Realtors Great meeting with the Iowa Association of Realtors! We discussed barriers to helping Iowans achieve home ownership and how we can work together to help Iowans afford family homes.
