Congressman Krishnamoorthi and representatives from the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) discuss the importance of combating hate throughout the district and the country with members of a range of local faith communities.
Last week, I convened an interfaith breakfast with representatives of the Anti-Defamation League and leaders from a number of faith communities in our area to discuss the alarming surge in hate crimes our country and region have faced in recent years. Over the last few months, a number of local hate-motivated incidents have drawn public attention, including antisemitic bullying at a middle school in Pingree Grove and Islamophobic harassment targeting DuPage Township Trustee Reem Townsend. I was grateful that Trustee Townsend was able to join us in sharing her experience and thoughts on how our community can come together against bigotry. These incidents are not who we are as Americans, and the interfaith breakfast I hosted sought to show that our communities are united against all forms of hate, discrimination, bigotry, and prejudice against anyone, while also developing community-based strategies to combat it.
I will soon be reintroducing my bicameral Hate Crimes Commission Act to establish a national bipartisan commission to investigate the increase in hate crimes we’ve seen in recent years and make recommendations to address it. I want to thank everyone who joined me at the breakfast for their thoughtful participation and insightful conversation. You can read more about our discussion in the Daily Herald here.

Congressman Krishnamoorthi presents representatives of Harper Community College with a ceremonial check for the federal funding he secured for the college’s new aviation maintenance program.
Last week, I presented Harper Community College President Dr. Avis Proctor and Board Chair William Kelley with a $500,000 ceremonial check for the federal funding I secured for the college’s new aviation maintenance program. This new initiative will provide training opportunities for students to gain technical skills critical for finding rewarding careers in the aviation industry, including certifications and degree programs in aviation maintenance. Specifically, the funding I secured will go to new curriculum development, instructional equipment, recruitment activities, student scholarships, and other grant activities that increase awareness of career opportunities in our area in the aviation industry. I was thrilled to be able to secure funding for this program, and I look forward to seeing the new heights to which Harper’s aviation maintenance graduates will soar in the decades to come.

Ranking Member Krishnamoorthi joined Chairman Mike Gallagher on CNBC’s Squawk Box to discuss the implications of the Committee’s letter to the four companies regarding alleged Uyghur forced labor. (Click the image above to watch the full interview.)

Last week, as Ranking Member of the Select Committee on the Strategic Competition Between the United States and the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), I joined with Chairman Mike Gallagher to send letters to four companies, Nike, Adidas, Shein, and Temu, about their alleged use of Uyghur forced labor from the People’s Republic of China in their supply chains, practices outlawed by the bipartisan 2021 Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act (UFLPA). Additionally, we have concerns that the Chinese companies Shein and Temu are continuing to use Uyghur forced labor through a loophole in the UFLPA as they sell hundreds of millions of dollars’ worth of clothing to American consumers.
The American people should be able to trust that the clothing they wear is not produced by slave labor. Our committee has heard from victims of the brutality of forced labor camps that are part of the CCP’s ongoing genocide against the Uyghurs and other ethnic minorities in China. These companies need to show that they’re following the law, and that their supply chains are free from forced labor. This is just the first step of our investigation, and I look forward to working with Chairman Gallagher to shine a light on how forced labor may contaminate our supply chains, and how we can put an end to this going forward. You can read full copies of the letters we sent to the four companies here.
