Letter from the Mayor

Dear Washingtonians,

Earlier this week, we hosted a half-day public safety summit with members of our local and federal public safety community as well as other stakeholders who support public safety in the District. My charge to all participants: critical introspection about what is working, what is not working, and what needs to change.?

Presenters included Chief Judge Anita Josey-Herring, the U.S. Attorney for the District Matthew Graves, Attorney General Brian Schwalb, Ward 8 Councilmember Trayon White, Ward 2 Councilmember and Chairwoman of the Committee on the Judiciary and Public Safety Brooke Pinto, and members of my public safety team.

After MPD provided an example of a weekly crime briefing, we heard from people in the room about their concerns and solutions. In our breakout groups, I heard from members of the community about what they think we need to do differently.

You can watch the presentations and panels in the video below.

Public Safety Summit

The safety and well-being of our community is my top priority. In the coming days, we will share some of the solutions that we intend to move forward with so that we can build a safer, stronger DC.?

Sincerely,

Muriel Bowser
