This week, Title 42 expired and we are witnessing even more chaos unfolding at our southern border. Many border cities in Texas have declared state of emergencies as thousands of migrants come across our border while this administration continues to do nothing.
On Thursday, I voted in favor of H.R. 2, Secure the Border Act of 2023, as it passed the House as the strongest border security bill in history. My team has been working endlessly to secure our border from hosting border tours to educating other members, to working with the Texas delegation to develop the Texas border plan, and to working this week to ensure we’d have the votes to pass this bill. Now, we have passed the strongest border bill that our country has ever seen.
We have given the Administration all the tools they need to do their job, and they have actively worked to find every loophole to do just the opposite. H.R. 2 is a step in the right direction as it closes many of these loopholes.
This bill would force the Biden Administration to restart construction of the border wall and deploy additional technology to help secure the Southern border. The bill will also increase the number of Border Patrol agents and provide bonus pay and require transparency regarding illegal crossings from the Department of Homeland Security. It will also strengthen current law to protect unaccompanied children from human trafficking. Also, it will end catch and release, end abuse of executive immigration authority and strengthen and streamline the asylum process.
Now, it is critical for the Senate to pass this bill as it will help us secure this border and disincentive this administration’s open border system. Instead of playing the blame game, I encourage this administration to sign this bill into law, so we can fix the chaos that’s occurring at our border. It is time for Biden and Mayorkas to stop ducking responsibility and enforce our immigration laws.
