Hi Friend,
This week, No Labels and our allies on Capitol Hill have been working around the clock to persuade our leaders to come together and act on two major crises facing our nation right now – the looming risk of a debt ceiling default, and the surge of migrants at the border coming as the COVID-era border restrictions come to an end.
The last time we got this close to default was back in 2011, when negotiators, including then-Vice President Biden and then-House Republican Whip Kevin McCarthy reached a last-minute deal to raise the debt ceiling in exchange for spending cuts.
But we are here to remind you that even though they avoided default, they cut it way too close. The stock markets fell 15%. For the first time in history, America’s credit rating was downgraded. This led to higher interest rates, and reduced consumer confidence.
We need our leaders to learn from the past and craft a bipartisan deal to raise the debt ceiling and protect us all from default and we need them to do it now.
Outside of the high stakes drama going on in Washington, I want to fill you in on an important development taking place in Maine. As part of our 2024 insurance policy, No Labels is engaged in a statewide voter registration drive in Maine. To get ballot access for a No Labels candidate in November 2024, we need 5,000 voters to join No Labels Maine and we are grateful that we have already crossed this threshold. We still have 7 months to go to sign up even more new voters. But, this week the Maine Secretary of State sent an intimidating letter to all 6,500 of our new members on her official letterhead, which she promptly leaked to the press. In the letter, she suggests on the basis of nothing more than vague third-hand rumors of “voter confusion,” that the 6,500 No Labels members did not intend to join our movement and instructs them on how to disenroll. To our knowledge she is not sending this letter to anyone who signed up to join the Democrats or the Republicans, only to No Labels members. We want anyone in Maine who has joined No Labels to know that you have done nothing wrong and that we will stand with you and protect your right to have joined No Labels.
We knew when we started this journey the powers that be would use every tool at their disposal to try and stop us from getting ballot access. Intimidating everyday citizens who want to have more choice on the ballot is undemocratic, full stop. But rest assured, this anti-democratic behavior on the part of elected officials will only make us stronger in the end.
You can show your support for our efforts in Maine and across the nation by donating to No Labels 2024. We want you to know that as we battle for ballot access across our great nation we will remain relentlessly positive. We are happy warriors, ready, willing and able to fight tooth and nail for our democracy and for our country. I hope you’ll stick with us on this journey!
