According to testimony provided by the Department of Labor Inspector General, improper payments in pandemic unemployment programs have left taxpayers on the hook for at least $191 billion. Outside experts put the number much higher at $400 billion. This week the House passed H.R. 1163, Protecting Taxpayers and Victims of Unemployment Fraud Act. This important piece of legislation I cosponsored provides incentives to states to recover fraudulent unemployment payments, improve program integrity and prevent future fraud.
