Last week, we hosted our 13th annual Huffman Hootenanny! I look forward to this event every year, and this one didn’t disappoint. We were lucky to be joined by Representatives Mike Thompson and Adam Schiff! It was a wonderful evening filled with music, community, big ideas, and plenty of great food and beer! We had a chance to celebrate our incredible progress, and the list of real, tangible results for our communities is long. Under the Biden-Harris administration, we have passed some of the most transformational legislation that we’ve seen in decades.
The American Rescue Plan that got the pandemic under control, reopened schools, and lifted our economy outta the ditch. The CHIPs and Science Act reclaims American leadership in technology, science, and high tech manufacturing.
The PACT Act finally extended healthcare benefits to veterans exposed to toxic burn pits. The Safer Communities Act is the first gun violence law we've been able to pass in 30 years, and it is currently providing funding all over the country for mental health, school safety and red flag laws.
We secured a trillion-dollar investment in infrastructure. And not just for traditional infrastructure, like roads and bridges, but also for broadband, modernizing the grid, and an electric vehicle charging network all over this country. We also secured the largest-ever investment in Western water infrastructure and drought and wildfire resilience.
Additionally, we passed the historic Inflation Reduction Act. This is the largest climate investment in the history of this country, with over $600 billion in clean energy tax incentives and direct investments to decarbonize our economy. It also provides critical prescription drug pricing reform that is already saving seniors. It was no easy feat, but we got it done.
Because of these legislative wins, our district is seeing millions in new federal funding awards almost every week.
And John, we are just getting started. That’s why extreme MAGA Republicans in Congress are desperately trying to derail implementation of these laws and repeal them before more Americans realize how beneficial they are.
That’s what’s on the line in next year’s election. If we win, we can keep implementing all of these game-changing laws and deliver even more results; if we lose, we hand the federal government over to Team Extreme.
You see what Team Extreme is doing right now with our nation’s credit. They passed a bill we call the Default On America Act, a thinly-veiled ransom note demanding that we repeal most of the good legislation from last Congress, slash funding for children's healthcare, nutrition, veterans benefits and a lot more, and then give huge new handouts to the fossil fuel industry. Unless we do all that in the next few days, they’re threatening to shoot the hostage (the global economy) by defaulting on our nation’s debt for the first time in history.
Threatening a default is unbelievably reckless, and make no mistake, John: the consequences would be disastrous.
But that’s just part of Team Extreme’s agenda. There’s also their ongoing attacks on our democracy, women’s reproductive rights, and their endless stoking of culture wars.
