Recent reporting by People For the American Way shows that in the decade since the Supreme Court handed a win to corporate interests in Citizens United v. FEC, outside spending in our elections has increased 435%. Ever since the Supreme Court delivered this misguided ruling, we have worked together to advocate for common sense reforms to ensure that our government works for the people, not for special interests.
Today, we are hitting a crucial milestone in this fight – the Democracy For All Amendment, which would amend the constitution to permit Congress and the states to set reasonable campaign finance rules is having its first ever committee hearing in the House of Representatives!

Under Citizens United, big spenders are deciding the policy priorities and direction on core issues that impact real people. From regulating the pharmaceutical industry to mitigating the climate change crisis and addressing the scourge of gun violence, we need to push for the real structural changes in the Democracy For All Amendment. Our democracy is at stake.
We can finally pass this amendment to take back our democracy -- an amendment that reflects the clear will of the American people -- but Congress needs to keep hearing from us and now is a critical moment.
This development on the Hill reflects the enormous support that exists for a constitutional amendment on the state and local level. To date, 20 states and over 800 towns and cities have officially gone on record in support of a constitutional amendment to get money out of politics.
