Dear Neighbors,

We have one week to go before the legislative session?s constitutionally mandated deadline, and we?re hard at work on the priorities of Minnesotans. Currently, the House is meeting with the Senate in conference committees to reconcile the differences between the two versions of the bills.

Here?s an update from the Capitol.

House Passes Paid Family and Medical Leave

Minnesotans believe in caring for one another. Yet, the vast majority of Minnesotans don?t have access to Paid Family and Medical Leave benefits. This means every day, Minnesotans face impossible choices between losing a paycheck or caring for a new child, an aging loved one, or themselves.?

This issue is very personal to me. When my son was born, he had to spend several weeks in the NICU. During that time, I was able to spend time with him because I had paid family and medical leave benefits, but many of the parents in the NICU I met did not. I believe no one should be forced to choose between earning a paycheck and caring for themselves or a family member. Minnesotans have been telling the Legislature for years that our current system isn?t working well for most people. That?s why the House has passed bills to establish a Paid Family and Medical Leave program multiple times in recent years under a divided government. We?ve campaigned on this issue for many years and will finally move this priority across the finish line this year.

This bill will help to make Minnesota the best state in the nation for children and families and complements all the other work Democrats are doing to help Minnesotans afford their lives, like investing in affordable housing, providing free school meals, and reducing health care costs.

Largest Housing Investment in History

This week the House approved the conference committee report on House File 2335 [ [link removed] ], the state?s Housing Budget. The legislation makes investments of $1 billion into our state?s most significant Housing commitment in our history. With this, the legislature will create housing stability for Minnesota families on the brink of homelessness, spur the production of new homes across the state, and deliver pathways to homeownership for thousands of Minnesotans. This bill includes $4 million for sprinkler installation in Seward Towers Apartments in our district? funding that will save lives. Housing is fundamental for all Minnesotans and should be a human right, and I was proud to vote ?Yes? on this bill.

Investing in Transportation

House DFLers have crafted an equitable, sustainable transportation budget to invest in Minnesota?s transportation system. The legislation balances addressing current transportation needs while building a stronger and more sustainable transportation system moving forward by leveraging multimodal federal investments, advancing climate initiatives, and improving safety for all Minnesotans.?

This week, I spoke at the groundbreaking for the B-Line bus rapid transit line, connecting Uptown Minneapolis to Downtown St. Paul. This line will go through our district via Lake Street and will serve our community efficiently and conveniently.

Free College?

This week the House approved the conference committee [ [link removed] ] report on House File 2073, the state?s Higher Education Budget. With declining enrollment across higher education, the report provides a record increase in investment for Minnesota?s colleges and universities. The Higher Education budget for 2024-2025 funds the Office of Higher Education, the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities, the University of Minnesota campuses, the Mayo Clinic Medical School, and Tribal Colleges. Notably, the budget provides free college to students with household incomes under $80,000.?
