King County asking for community input on budget cuts
King County launched a community survey asking for public input on prioritizing services funded by the County’s General Fund to inform looming budget cuts. The 2025-2026 General Fund is facing a $100 million revenue shortfall due to the state’s arbitrary one percent limit on property tax collections, which has not been updated in 20 years and now coincides with increased costs and high rates of inflation exceeding 9%.
To prevent deeper cuts in the next biennial budget and to provide time for affected programs to wind down, King County will be considering a budget in the fall that will include cuts to general fund programs.
Learn more in the Executive's announcement.
The community survey will be open until May 18. Executive Constantine will use the input gathered to develop his budget which he will propose to the County Council in the fall. The public will have additional opportunities to engage in budget decisions when the County Council holds public hearings.
Help King County design a new park ranger program
In 2021 and 2022 King County Parks conducted the Safety and Belonging Community Needs Assessment and Equitable Park Access Community Needs Assessment focused on increasing equitable access, safety, and belonging in parks and on trails. During these efforts, community members expressed that safety and equitable access aren’t one size fits all, and asked King County Parks to explore a variety of solutions. One suggested solution was the establishment of a park ranger program.
King County Parks would like your help to define the roles and responsibilities of a proposed park ranger program. Share your feedback through an online survey, open now through Wednesday May 31, and a community forum on Saturday June 17 at Dick Thurnau Memorial Park in White Center. Attendees will be compensated $115 for participation in the 1.5-hour forum. If you’re interested in participating, please register here.
If you or someone you know lives, recreates, or stays in south or unincorporated King County, identifies as a Black, Indigenous, or Person of Color, immigrant, refugee, differently abled, or someone for whom English is your second language, we particularly want to hear your opinion as we want to develop a park ranger program that’s truly welcoming, anti-racist, and responsive to the needs of your community.
Thank you for taking the time to provide your honest feedback. We appreciate your input! For more information on the timeline of this process, please visit our survey page.
Queremos elaborar un nuevo programa de guardaparques basándonos en los comentarios de lacomunidad. Queremos que nos diga en qué deberíamos enfocarnos y en qué no, y cómo podemos hacerque el programa sea acogedor para todos.
