John, CNN gave Donald Trump free rein to showcase his abhorrent views during a town hall in front of an adoring MAGA crowd.
To begin, he lied constantly. He denied his 2020 election loss. He denied pressuring the Georgia secretary of state to find him more votes. He called a police officer who defended Congress during the January 6th insurrection a “thug,” and denied the mob put his vice president’s life in danger. He refused to call Vladimir Putin a war criminal or to say who he wanted to win the war.
And one day after a jury of Trump’s peers found him civilly liable for sexual misconduct in New York, he attacked the survivor he victimized and disgustingly made light of that civil ruling — and the audience laughed right along with him.
I know it’s not the news you wanted to hear. It’s not the news that I wanted to deliver. But like it or not, Trump’s grip on the Republican Party is stronger than ever before. And given that he is by far the leading GOP candidate for president, the threat to our constitutional democracy is as great as ever.
The people in the room with Trump, and his millions of supporters across the nation, have fully bought into his brand of lies, anger, and downright cruelty. I wish it were not so, but we have to do more than defeat Trump. We have to defeat the MAGA movement he started, and that remains fiercely loyal to him alone.
So I’m going to need your help. Especially with the media giving him an open platform to continue to spread his lies and demagoguery. Nothing less than the future of our democracy is at stake.

I wish I could say that I was surprised at how CNN aired a town featuring Donald Trump and his many, many lies and falsehoods.
For nearly two hours, Trump lied about the 2020 election, denigrated the reporter interviewing him, and played to his adoring crowd. It was a two-hour Trump infomercial.
Have we learned nothing from 2016? Or 2020? Trump has literally called for my imprisonment over my efforts to hold him accountable during his first impeachment and to investigate the attack he incited on January 6th.
He doesn’t want me in the Senate. He doesn’t want oversight or accountability. But that is what our system of government demands. And I need your help.
Chip in $10 to help us respond to Trump’s CNN town hall and prepare for the many fights ahead. I need you with me, now more than ever.
Trump’s campaign of disinformation and attacks on truth and decency are a threat to everything we hold dear – and it’s up to us to fight back.
Thanks for standing with me today.
