I am grateful that I’ll get to spend this Mother’s Day with my own fabulous mom. And I look forward to celebrating the many wonderful mothers who lead us with strength, vision, and clarity.
We are lucky to have so many moms across the country working so hard in so many ways for our communities and country. And we have to work for them. Every day.
We know that in Texas and across the country, moms face many challenges—from ensuring access to affordable child care to securing equal pay for equal work to surviving pregnancy itself.
It may seem hard to believe, but it is true: Our country has the highest maternal mortality rate in the developed world. Since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade and states enacted even more restrictions to access to critical reproductive health care, experts predict that the maternal mortality rate will rise even more. We also know that many of the conditions that have led to this high death rate are preventable.
That is why I am working in Congress to address these issues and disparities. As whip of the Pro-Choice Caucus and a founding member of the Black Maternal Health Caucus, I’ve made it a priority to find policy solutions for the issues facing mothers, especially around reproductive health care. From securing funding for programs that support Black maternal health in Harris County to introducing and voting for legislation that ensures women’s rights to make our own reproductive health care decisions, I am working with a broad coalition to give moms the support they need.
The work we do together is a critical part of that effort. By working together to elect people who will prioritize the health, dignity, and freedom of women across the country, who will work in partnership to solve real problems and protect our rights, we are making a real difference. I am grateful to everyone who has made it possible for me to do this work, and I am committed to continuing it.
It is with that in mind, that I send wishes for a happy Mother’s Day to all the moms of #TeamLizzie!
Together, we can do anything,
