East Palestine Update -- 5/12/23

(COLUMBUS, Ohio)?The following are updates from the State of Ohio regarding remediation work at the site of the Norfolk Southern train derailment in East Palestine, Ohio.

Hazardous Waste Removal

According to Ohio EPA, approximately 16.6 million gallons of liquid wastewater have been hauled out of East Palestine in total.?There is currently a pile of approximately?25,400 tons of excavated soil waiting for removal from East Palestine, versus?39,300?tons that have been removed.?

Surface Water Information Session

Ohio EPA took part in a community meeting focused on surface water in East Palestine on Thursday, May 11. Around 40 members of the community attended to hear about Ohio EPA?s surface water monitoring program and the status of the cleanup of Leslie Run and Sulphur Run. Sediment cleaning in Sulphur Run has resulted in significant improvements in water quality and the reduction of contaminants. Sediment cleaning in Leslie Run began this week.?Ohio EPA's next focus is to develop a sediment sampling plan and conduct a watershed survey.?
