This week we celebrated National Teacher Appreciation Week, a time to recognize and acknowledge the important role that teachers play in all of our lives. Teachers are responsible for shaping the minds of the next generation and their impact extends far beyond the classroom, which is why it is essential to support and appreciate what teachers do every day, not just during this celebratory week. This means funding our schools and paying teachers the wages they deserve. Let’s take this week to show our gratitude for teachers, but also let’s continue to advocate for and support them every day.

This week Governor Murphy signed the ‘Health Care Heroes Violence Prevention Act’, making it a criminal offense to intentionally threaten health care professionals or volunteers in an effort to intimidate them or interfere with their work. The Act also establishes additional penalties against individuals who assault health care workers or volunteers.
“If there’s one thing the COVID-19 pandemic made abundantly clear, it is the essential role health care workers play in our society,” said Governor Murphy. “Growing threats and attacks against these courageous heroes are unacceptable. We owe health care workers, including volunteers and employees in health care settings, our gratitude and respect. This law will provide greater protections for health care workers in our state to help deter both physical and verbal acts of violence against these professionals.”
This Act is an essential step in protecting our healthcare professionals and volunteers who have been threatened and intimidated during these challenging times. In the face of misinformation and fear, our health care heroes have tirelessly fought to keep our communities safe, often putting themselves at risk. By criminalizing intentional threats and intimidation, this act sends a clear message that such behavior will not be tolerated. |
Throughout the month of May, the New Jersey Democratic State Committee will celebrate both Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month and Jewish American Heritage Month with a weekly spotlight on trailblazing leaders throughout the state. This week we are proud to highlight our Jewish Caucus Co-Chairs, Justin Goldsman and Alana Burman. |
Justin Goldsman, Chair of NJDSC Jewish Caucus, is a political operative and organizer who has long been committed to his town of West Orange and the state of NJ. He holds a degree in History from the University of Miami and a M.Ed from the University of Florida. He has worked on numerous races at all levels of government, from local council races to serving as the Senior Organizer for Coalitions and Outreach on Governor Murphy’s 2021 re-election campaign. Justin is a member of the West Orange Democratic Committee and involved with numerous organizations and causes. He is eager to do the work of uplifting and supporting Democratic and Jewish values, from fighting antisemitism and white supremacy, to protecting reproductive freedom, to expanding voting rights and democracy.

Alana Burman has a background in public safety, civil rights, and education in the areas of antisemitism and bias. She has experience from the public service sector, along with strategic organizing and advocacy at both the state and federal level. Previously, Alana was the Associate Regional Director in New York /New Jersey for the Anti-Defamation League where she led grassroots civil rights partnerships and programs. Alana currently is the Jewish Federation Director of the Jewish Community Relations Committee (JCRC).

This week, President Biden continued taking a strong stance against extremist MAGA House Republicans who are trying to hold the economy hostage. These Republicans are asking elected officials to choose between an economic plan that will be catastrophic to American families and workers, or defaulting on our debt and entering a recession that would also hurt American families and workers. President Biden has said that default is not an option and is prepared to negotiate a solution that moves America forward and benefits our working families.

Republicans’ extremist economic bill would slash funding, and jobs in critical service industries like education, healthcare, veterans care, and food security, which will have a devastating impact on some of our most vulnerable members of society. By threatening to default on our debt, they are risking the loss of about 8 million jobs and a possible recession. This is not a responsible way to govern. The economy and the livelihoods of millions of Americans should not be used as bargaining chips for partisan gain and tax breaks for the wealthy.

P.S.S. The NJDSC would like to congratulate Colette Ztanze from Wantage who is celebrating 45 years as a member of the Sussex County Democratic Committee! Colette was a founding member of the Wantage Democratic Club, and ultimately the Wantage Democratic Committee. She established and still runs the Sussex Wantage Pre-School Learning Center and children and adults all over Sussex County know her as Ms. Collette. She was twice named an Elks Distinguished Citizen and has worked on many political campaigns in her time, from Governor Florio to Governor Murphy, from Senator Booker to Congressman Josh Gottheminer as well as countless local contests. We congratulate and salute Ms. Colette for her continued dedication to our Democratic values and ideals!
