Every time we experience a tragedy involving guns, people with mental illness are drawn into the conversation. The truth is that the vast majority of violence is not perpetrated by people with mental illness.
Recently, there are more and more headlines of mass shootings and public tragedies. It never gets easier, and for some, these tragedies can have an effect on their everyday life.
Although much attention gets paid to the perpetrators and those killed in these crimes, what about the emotional, behavioral, and psychological consequences of children that have witnessed the crimes or who are hearing about the crimes constantly through mass media?
For our AAPI communities, the mental health crisis, increase in gun violence and harmful rhetoric are interconnected. It’s not enough to condemn the violent attacks against our communities.
