** American Psychological Association honors Nanette Gartrell with the 2023 John Fryer Award

On Monday, May 22, The American Psychological Association will honor Williams Institute Visiting Distinguished Scholar Nanette Gartrell, M.D., with the 2023 John Fryer Award. The award recognizes the impact of Nanette's extensive research on the mental health of sexual minorities.

Dr. Gartrell's research on the sexual abuse of patients by psychiatrists in the 1980s was instrumental in changing the ethics codes for medicine and psychiatry. In addition, the U.S. National Longitudinal Lesbian Family Study (NLLFS) she started in 1986 is the largest, longest-running study of sexual minority parent families. The study has been cited in court cases and legislation concerning marriage equality, foster care, and adoption and has made a significant impact on the lives of LGBTQ+ people throughout the world.
