Dear John,

In the last few months, New York has seen an alarming rise in anti-Semitism that is echoed in the rise of hate and division nationwide. Jewish, Muslim, Black and Brown, immigrant, and LGBTQ communities — all of us have a shared interest in defeating Islamophobia, anti-Semitism, xenophobia, racism, homophobia & transphobia, and all forms of identity-based violence.

But bringing communities together across lines of difference in times of heightened fear is not easy. That’s why I’m so grateful to the community organizations and congregations who are organizing next week’s Day Against Hate -- an opportunity for communities across New York to come together, learn concrete upstander [[link removed]] skills, and begin to build the relationships we need to protect ourselves and each other from hate violence.

Day Against Hate · Thursday, February 13th, 2020

Yesterday, I joined the NYC Human Rights Commission, Jews for Racial and Economic Justice (JFREJ) and Desis Rising Up and Moving (DRUM) to talk with the Borough Park Jewish community and neighboring Kensington Bangladeshi Muslim community about how we come together to keep each other safe in the wake of recent, local anti-Semitic violence. It’s thanks to organizing like this that we are able to imagine building a safety based on relationships and community rather than just more policing and incarceration.

Hope you can join us in this work next week, and beyond.

Brad
