Hi John,
I'm reaching out today with grave concern about the latest attacks on our community’s civil rights - we need your help in fighting back. Disturbing legislation attempting to ban certain immigrant communities from owning property is rapidly advancing in states across the country [[link removed]] .
On Monday [[link removed]] , Florida Governor Ron DeSantis enacted legislation (SB264) that would restrict the purchase of property for individuals from “countries of concern” such as Iran, China, Cuba, Venezuela, North Korea, and Russia. Anyone purchasing many forms of property - like agricultural land or property within 10 miles of critical infrastructure, like airports - will now have to sign an affidavit claiming they are not a “foreign principal” that is “domiciled” in a “country of concern,” including Iran. This is an offensive and discriminatory law that erodes the rights of our community. Just how bad it is will become apparent if it is allowed to go into effect.
However, there’s still a chance to stop this law before it discriminates against Iranians and other immigrant communities. We are supporting efforts in coordination with other impacted communities to undertake immediate legal action against the Florida government over SB264. We need your help identifying potential plaintiffs from the Iranian/Iranian-American community in Florida. The ideal candidate would be a Florida resident who either:
(a) Owns property in Florida on a non-immigrant visa
(b) Is considering purchasing property in Florida on a non-immigrant visa
(c) Is a real estate agent who primarily serves Iranian clients.
Do you, or anyone you know, fit these criteria? If so, please fill out this intake form [[link removed]] and we will get in touch with you. There are no legal fees involved, and no mandatory court appearances. fill out this form [[link removed]]
This kind of legislation risks instigating a domino effect, spurring government-endorsed housing discrimination against our community and anyone perceived as being from an "enemy" country. We're sliding down a slippery slope, and we must act now to prevent this.
Furthermore, John, I urge you to forward this email to your network in Florida to help spread the word.
Thank you for standing for justice and equal civil rights for our community, and for all communities.
Sincerely,
Myriam Sabbaghi National Organizing Manager, NIAC
