Parliament Square is still open for business

You may have noticed the ongoing work taking place to redevelop Spindles into a new market and events space, which is part of our wider plans to create a place where more people want to live, work and visit.

Despite the ongoing work, businesses at Parliament Square are still open for business and ready to welcome you. We just want to reassure you that the businesses located at Parliament Square are unaffected by these works and are operating as usual.

We encourage you to continue to support the businesses during this time and to visit Parliament Square for some lovely food, snacks, and drinks.

First School Street scheme due to go live – making our roads safer for children

Oldham’s first School Street will go live on June 5 at St Anne’s Primary School, Royton on June 5. School Streets enable children and their parents to walk, cycle, or wheel to and from school, which reduces air pollution, congestion, and problem parking.

The council, via the schools, are inviting parents, nearby residents, and businesses to a drop-in event so they can find out more information. An online session has also been arranged for those who cannot attend in person. Email the active travel team for more information and the event link (mailto:[email protected])

To ensure the schemes work properly, certain roads around the schools will be opened to people walking, cycling, or wheeling (eg scooters) only. School streets are in operation at drop off and pick up, during term times.

We will continue to work with a number of other schools, with more set to go live over the coming months.

We urgently need more people to foster in Oldham

The shortfall of foster carers in Oldham is being highlighted by The Fostering Network and Oldham Council’s Fostering Service during national #FosterCareFortnight. The campaign runs from 15 to 28 May and aims to raise the profile of fostering and show how foster care transforms lives.

This year’s theme is #FosteringCommunity which celebrates the dedication and resilience of foster carers while highlighting that more fostering households are needed to make sure every child who cannot live with their own family gets the care they need and is well supported within their own community.

Could you be a foster carer?

Another 63 offenders have appeared in court and were successfully prosecuted. More cases are pending.

Whether you’re a veteran hiker or a novice, the Oldham Way offers something for everyone, and Greater Manchester Walking Festival is a perfect time to explore the landscape.

Those with walking experience can comfortably navigate all of its highs and lows in a couple of days, while families and those new to its tracks might want to explore one of the seven recommended routes.

Shaw dust issue

Our Environmental Health team have taken action against a demolition company after residents raised concerns about dust levels in Shaw.

Following a site visit on April 27 the contractors were advised to put systems in place that would help the issue. This involved fitting a water suppressor onto a machine that was crushing waste. They confirmed they would.

We received a further complaint on May 5 and a follow up site visit found the firm had not put the agreed measure in place.

Officers served an immediate notice on the company to stop using the machine. If they were to breach the order and carry on working without adequate systems in place they could face prosecution.

The council will continue to monitor the site.
