Mother's Day 2021

Dear Neighbors,

Happy Mother?s Day to all of the amazing women that do so much for our families. We love you and appreciate you! Enjoy your special day!

With less than 2 weeks to go in the 2023 legislative session, we are starting to see final versions of budget and policy bills come before the House of Representatives for approval.

Remember, Governor Walz and Democrats are looking to increase overall state spending by 40%, spend the entire $17.5 billion budget surplus, and raise taxes by nearly $10 billion despite the surplus. This is nothing to say of the radical policies that accompany much of the new spending and tax increases.

Those of you that know me, know that I do my best to remain positive. But the lack of commonsense in most of these bills is truly astounding and will lead to egregious results that are going to hurt all Minnesotans.

Here is a brief recap of some of the Conference Committee Reports that were approved this week.

*Veterans*

On a positive note, we were able to give unanimous approval (131-0) to the Veterans budget and policy bill. House Republicans successfully added numerous provisions to the bill that were retained by the conference committee in the final bill. This includes expanding the Veteran Bonus program to veterans who currently live in Minnesota, even though they may not have lived in the state when they enlisted, as well as veterans who served in the Inherent Resolve Military campaign.

Our military members make great sacrifices to keep us safe and defend our liberty. This bill supports our State?s National Guard members and veterans after their service to our state and nation concludes.

*Legacy *

I voted against this year?s Legacy bill because certain provisions that were initially included that provide financial accountability for entities that receive Legacy funding were stripped during the conference committee.

Knowing that these important guiderails were removed made this a relatively easy ?no? vote for me. Nevertheless, the bill was approved and now heads to Gov. Walz for his signature.

*Housing*

The final Housing bill was approved on Tuesday. It raises the metro sales tax by .25%, making life in Minnesota even more expensive for all of us. It alone will raise taxes by $190 million per year when fully implemented. In addition to the taxes, the bill spends $1.1 Billion of the surplus for housing, meaning it goes to subsidize rent, maintain current low-income housing inventory, and builds some affordable homes.

Nothing in the bill will actually lower the cost to build a home. Again, easy ?no? vote.

Higher Education

This bill was also approved on Tuesday and once again does nothing to address the root causes of soaring tuition rates and bloated administrative budgets.

Included is an 18.5% increase in funding even though we've seen a 6% decline in enrollment at the University of Minnesota and a 27.9% systemwide decline in enrollment at the Minnesota State colleges and universities.?

Without addressing these issues, we continue to just throw more and more tax dollars at problems. This is no way to govern.

*Staying in Touch*

Stay tuned as there will be more updates next week when we vote on additional bills.

Until then, please do not hesitate to reach out to me to share any thoughts or concerns you may have about state government or the job I'm doing as your representative. It would be great to talk with you. I can be reached by phone at 651-296-8237 or via email [email protected].

Have a great day,

Brian
