Thank you! Week of Action and Next Steps
Dear John,
Thank you to all of our partners who participated in our Five Year Bar Week of Action last week. Whether you attended a meeting with your member of Congress or participated in our tweetchat, your actions helped raise awareness and build support for lifting the five year bar. Please keep us updated on the results of your congressional meetings or other actions your organization took.

Before we dive in, we at PIF want to take a moment to acknowledge the significance of this moment. The arbitrary and inhuman “Title 42” policy is coming to an end. We hope that federal, state, and local government seize this moment to acknowledge the importance of immigrant families’ access to healthcare, food and other basics every family should have. And we share the disappointment expressed by so many PIF member organizations that the Biden Administration plans to replace this bad policy with another. We are also saddened by the loss of life in Texas, following two separate attacks fueled by anti-immigrant hate. And we stand with our members and allies in Florida, resolute in our opposition to newly-enacted legislation that would turn doctors and nurses into ICE agents and deepen the chilling effect facing immigrant families. At times like these, we must stand resolute in our vision that every individual deserves the opportunity to thrive -- regardless of where they were born.
In This Edition
This week, we’re sharing next steps for our week of action, an opportunity from our partners at the Coalition on Human Needs, recommendations on economic security for immigrant families, and a reminder about our webinar with No Kid Hungry and BSP Research in just a few short hours. Read on to learn more.
Sign On: LIFT the BAR Letter
PIF is circulating a sign-on letter [[link removed]] bringing national, state, and local organizations together in support of the bill . The letter will be sent to Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries to encourage swift action to pass the LIFT the BAR Act. We encourage you to sign on to our letter, even if your organization has formally endorsed the bill with Representative Jayapal.
If you haven’t already heard, very soon, the Lifting Immigrant Families Through Benefits Access Restoration (LIFT the BAR Act) will be reintroduced in the 118th Congress. This landmark legislation, led by Representative Jayapal and Senator Hirono, restores access to programs like Medicaid, CHIP, and SNAP by removing the five-year bar [[link removed]] and other barriers that deny critical care and aid to people who are lawfully present. Congratulations to everyone who helped get us to this point!

Support: Responsible Budget and Debt Policies
While joining other PIF members who are doing important work to eliminate eligibility restrictions and barriers to safety net access based on immigration status, the Coalition on Human Needs is looking for national, state, and local organizations to sign a letter [[link removed]] to Congress by Friday, May 19 to protect existing human needs programs. You can help even more by forwarding this message to other organizations – we need a strong showing in every state. To sign the letter, click here [[link removed]] .
As you may know, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen has announced the federal government will no longer be allowed to borrow money on or about June 1 – sooner than previously estimated. Congress needs to increase the borrowing authority now – the debt limit – and this letter calls on Congress to do just that. Join CHN in saying NO to slashing appropriations for child care, education, housing, mental health and substance use treatment, and much more.
Read: Inclusive Policies and Economic Security
A new blog post by Georgetown Center on Poverty and Inequality details the negative impacts immigrant families face as a result of current policies and highlights the immigrant-inclusive reforms needed to achieve a more equitable and prosperous society and boost economic opportunity.
