Mothers Day
Dear Neighbors,
Before we get into this week?s legislative update from St. Paul, I want to wish you a very Happy Mother?s Day. Mothers play an incredibly important role in the lives of our families, society, and communities. Thank you!
Update from St. Paul
Conference Committees have been meeting this week as final agreements between the House and Senate on these large budget and policy bills are being worked out. As of this writing, the following bills have received final approval in the House:
* Legacy
* Housing
* Veterans and Military Affairs
* Higher Education
* Agriculture
As always, each of these bills contains numerous provisions that would have earned my support if given the chance. However, as is the case with omnibus bills, these legislative packages are jammed full of dozens of individual bills, forcing lawmakers to simply vote ?yes? or ?no?.
I?m sure that you can imagine, with Democrats running both the Senate and House, each of these bills?outside of a few?is filled with radical policies and out-of-control spending and taxation.
Remember, Democrats and Governor Walz are looking to raise overall spending by 40%, spend the entire $17.5 billion budget surplus, and raise taxes by nearly $10 billion.
Legacy Bill
On the Legacy bill in particular, I voted ?no? because some very important guardrails and accountability provisions were removed by Democrats during the conference committee.
One such provision would have prohibited Legacy funding from going to organizations that have been found liable for sexual harassment. This language was initially added as an amendment to the House bill I offered over concerns that Honor the Earth, a controversial environmental group formerly led by Winona LaDuke, could receive funding for a museum in Park Rapids.?
The organization was recently ordered to pay $750,000 to a former employee for failing to properly address sexual harassment allegations. The change made by the conference committee, stripping this language, opens the possibility that this group "could" receive funding.
I think all of us agree that it would be wrong for this group to receive taxpayer dollars for their project. Unbelievably, the Democrats stripped these protections from the bill.
You can watch my back-and-forth with Chairman Leon Lillie about this provision here:?[link removed]
*Staying in Touch*
Things are rapidly unfolding here in St. Paul as we?re days away from final adjournment. I will keep you updated on more bills as they move forward. I would expect action on additional bills later today and even possibly over the weekend.
Stay tuned for more as things develop.
