A week ago, the far-right extremist supermajority in the General Assembly passed a dangerous ban on abortion care.

They want you to think this is a 12 week ban. It’s not. It bans medication abortion at 10 weeks and will effectively ban abortions for many people at any time because of the new requirement of 3 in-person visits and new burdens and restrictions that create obstacles for women, doctors and clinics.

Republican leadership wanted to satisfy their centrist lawmakers, so they called it a 12 week ban. But they couldn’t get the far right extremists in their party to vote for a 12 week ban, so they threw in a bunch of fine print that bans abortion in many cases. I will veto it.

I’ll explain further, but first, I need to request your help.

Make no mistake: far-right Republicans want to ban abortion completely, and this legislation is just their first step.

By restricting the use of medication abortion down to ten weeks and putting onerous requirements on when and where visits to medical professionals are needed, abortion will become inaccessible to many women.

This is just wrong — and the GOP knows it. That’s why they pushed their bill through in just two days, preventing amendments (even from their own members).

I have always pledged to do everything in my power to protect North Carolinians’ most fundamental rights. That’s why I’ll use my veto power on this, John.

But we have to be ready to fight back at the ballot box, too.
