Data Informs School Nursing Practice
Data can be used to create and maintain a culture of evidence-based and data-informed practice. Evidence-based practice is the foundation of 21st century school nursing practice and is an integral part of the Scope and Standards of School Nursing Practice. Evidence-based, data-informed practice is utilized in all five of the practice components that make up the Framework for 21st Century School Nursing Practice.
NASN’s Hill Day Aims to Educate Legislators About Nursing Issues
NASN’s Board of Director’s convened in Washington, D.C., for the winter Board meeting and for Hill Day. The Board of Directors all met with their two senators and one representative to educate them about school nursing issues and advocate to keep children safe, healthy, and ready to learn. The Journal of School Nursing (JOSN) February Edition is Available
Health Risks and Outcomes of Homelessness in School-Age Children and Youth
Over 1.35 million children and youth (ages 5-18) were identified as homeless during the 2016-2017 school year. JOSN's February edition offers a scoping review of the literature identifying studies of the physical, mental, and behavioral health risks and outcomes of school-age children experiencing homelessness or housing instability.
Feedback Requested for Vaping Toolkit Survey
NASN has received grant funding to create a toolkit for school nurses to stop vaping in schools. As part of that process, NASN is seeking to learn more about vaping education programs for middle school aged students (6-8th grade) that are currently being implemented in schools across the U.S. created by or directly involving a school nurse.

National Wear Red Day, Friday February 7
American Heart Month is here! Kick off the month by celebrating National Wear Red Day on Friday, February 7 to bring greater attention to heart disease as the leading cause of death in the U.S Join the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) and The Heart Truth® in promoting awareness about heart health and inspiring the people in your life to prevent heart disease. This year’s theme, “#OurHearts are Healthier Together,” emphasizes the importance of people working together to make heart healthy lifestyle changes. NHLBI resources will make participation easy. Use Wear Red Day resources to help spread the word. Visit the American Heart Month web page to find additional resources to use throughout the month.
Improving School Community and Student Health
Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC)
Here is an update on the progress of the NLC at the beginning of the 2020 legislative session: There are six states with pending NLC legislation (MA, MI, PA, RI, VT, WA). Guam is officially the first U.S. territory to introduce NLC legislation. Additional introductions are expected throughout the 2020 session. To find out if your state is moving forward with joining the compact, visit the campaign site and scroll down to see an interactive map. To let your lawmakers know you support the NLC, Take Action and Support the NLC today!

Last Chance to Submit e-Posters for NASN2020 Today
Spread the word! NASN wants you or your school district to share your initiatives with school nurses across the globe. Presenters will get the opportunity to network with attendees and share the key points of their e-Poster with learners. If you have a topic, research, or quality improvement project that is pivotal for the school nursing community to know about, then submit an e-Poster abstract today for NASN2020.

The deadline for submitting an e-Poster abstract is TODAY, Thursday, February 6, 2020 at 11:59 p.m. Eastern.
NASN2020 : Registration, Room Block Open Tomorrow
School nurses and members of school health teams from across the United States and overseas will gather for four days of education and networking. This year’s conference will take place at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas from June 30 – July 3, 2020, with an additional day of pre-conference education on June 29. 

NASN2020, A Seat at the Table: Winning Together for Student Health, will highlight emerging trends in student health, evidence-based practices, and crucial partnerships to support student success. The educational and networking experiences will allow all who attend to gain the skills needed to garner a seat at the table in securing student health and healthy communities.

Don’t miss your chance to hear about top trending topics and issues impacting students and school nurses across the globe. The NASN2020 Livestream event includes admittance to seven (7) general sessions, including opening and closing keynotes, and two (2) breakout sessions. Up to 12.0 CNE contact hours can be earned. 

By registering for NASN2020 Livestream, participants can watch streamed sessions live and access them for 90 days following the event.
