A Fox spokesperson confirmed that the network plans to write-off the Dominion lawsuit settlement on their taxes.
Federal law allows taxpayers to write off many legal costs, providing they are “ordinary and necessary” business expenses. The IRS has affirmed that paying out settlements is a cost of doing business.
Because Fox paid $787 million to settle the lawsuit, experts calculate that they can get a tax break of up to $213 million. That is unacceptable. Taxpayers shouldn't be on the hook for Fox's lies.
Rep. Brendan Boyle (D-PA) is considering legislation to fix this loophole, and Congress must hold hearings to determine the best solution.
