It’s well past the time we make Atlantic Ave safer for pedestrians and cyclists.

Dear Neighbor,

We can not wait for another crash, another life lost or near miss, to finally make NYC streets safe for pedestrians and cyclists.

After the tragic death of Katie Harris on Atlantic Avenue, I joined my colleagues in government and her loved ones to highlight the long-standing safety issues and to commemorate the lives lost along the corridor. In the last ten years, there have been over 100 crashes that resulted in serious injury and multiple fatalities, despite the entire corridor being a “Vision Zero” priority. But we know that’s not the complete picture. Near misses and unsafe crossings due to speeding cars or running red lights don’t go into the stats but are the true reality of our streets.

Atlantic Avenue is one of the most dangerous streets in NYC, and the community has been desperate for solutions for some time. Immediately after the fatal crash that killed Katie, we sent a letter to NYC DOT asking for solutions that have long been discussed and supported by the community.

To truly make our streets safe will require street redesign as well as legislation. We cannot leave Albany this year without passing Sammy’s Law, allowing NYC to control its speed limits. Call your Assembly member and City Councilman and ask them to support this legislation. It’s too important not to get done.

You know I’m passionate about street safety and have been a champion from before my time in Albany. Let me know what you think needs to happen to make your street safer, and I’ll have my team reach out.
