John, I’m headed to the U.S. House floor right now to cast my vote on the Republican’s extreme, unrealstic, anti-immigrant legislation.
I’m voting no. Here’s why👇
1. It turns away those who need our help the most. This legislation attempts to completely strip the asylum process, something that has helped many seek refuge in our country for decades.
2. It doesn’t provide much-needed resources to the border. Instead, it proposes extreme policies, like having police - who are already overwhelmed - act as immigration agents.
3. It’s not a long-term solution. It provides no path to permanent citizenship for the 580,000 DACA DREAMers who were brought to the U.S. as children and have always called this home.
I’ve lived on both sides of the border and my district includes 180 miles of the US-Mexico border. We’ve felt the effects of a broken immigration system, but we also know the opportunities immigrants bring to our community. I want to see us come together on real solutions and get this done.
We need comprehensive immigration reform that treats asylum-seekers humanely, offers a fair path to citizenship for those who meet certain requirements, and ensures that our border is secure.
The bottom line, this bill falls short. That’s why I’m voting no.
Yours,
Gabe Vasquez
U.S. Representative (NM-02)
P.S. My far-right extremist opponent is going to use this vote against me in attack ads. But I’m not going to stop doing what’s right just to have an easier re-election. John, can you chip in $20.24 (or any amount) to help me get out our positive message and protect this TOP TARGET seat?
