CHBA BC Heads to Ottawa for National's "Day on the Hill"
CHBA BC
This week, a CHBA BC delegation represented our province at CHBA National's "Day on the Hill" in Ottawa. This annual event brings together industry leaders from across the country to meet with government officials and advocate for policies that support the home building and renovation industry.
Team BC met with several Members of Parliament and government officials to discuss issues affecting the industry. These discussions included topics such as supporting first-time home buyers, encouraging more purpose rental projects, and tying immigration to trade shortages.
Our group met with Tako Van Popta, MP for Langley-Aldergrove, John Aldag, MP for Cloverdale-Langley and Ken Hardie, MP for Fleetwood-Port Kells. CHBA BC members also had the opportunity to meet with the Canadian government's cabinet members, the Honourable Ahmed Hussen, Minister of Housing and Diversity and Inclusion, and the Honourable Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship.
The event is important in ensuring housing affordability and increasing supply stays top-of-mind with B.C.’s Members of Parliament, Federal Ministers, and other key government officials.

Home Building is Not Keeping up with Canada's Population Growth
Canada.com
A study published by National Bank of Canada Financial Markets found Canada’s working-age population grew by 80,000 people in March alone and by 204,000 in the first three months of the year.
National Bank further noted that new home construction in Canada has not kept pace, estimating home builders added only 57,000 new units in the first quarter of this year. The report further noted that the ratio of housing starts to the working-age population is now 0.27, the lowest on record and below the historical average of 0.61. Canada’s current population growth trajectory is driven by the federal government’s mandate to bring in about 500,000 new Canadians annually for the next three years.
