Hi John,
Over the last two weeks, Uber drivers have made history in their fight for safer working conditions.
Uber drivers are building momentum to end the safety crisis they are facing. From organizing across the country in a coordinated national day of action to speaking out at Uber’s annual shareholder meeting, drivers are beginning to build power that’s becoming more and more difficult for Uber to ignore.
Last week Uber drivers united in a coordinated national day of action in six cities across the country to expose how Uber’s business model creates unsafe working conditions for drivers.

Earlier this week – for the first time ever – Uber drivers moved a floor resolution at Uber’s shareholder meeting that would require the company to address this crisis. As Uber celebrated record revenue at their annual shareholder meeting, Jocilyn Floyd – an Uber driver and leader at Chicago Gig Alliance – presented a resolution calling on Uber to end unfair deactivation practices and pay workers more fairly and transparently. With support from PowerSwitch Action and our network of allies, Jocilyn shared her story as a driver working in the midst of an escalating health and safety crisis driven by Uber’s exploitative business model.
Uber tried to downplay the health and safety crisis to block the resolutions, but this fight is just getting started. Next, Chicago Gig Alliance is introducing the Rideshare Living Wage and Safety Ordinance [[link removed]] in City Hall. The ordinance would provide higher safety standards, a more transparent investigation and appeals process for driver deactivations, and a cap on the amount of fares rideshare app companies can take in Chicago.

Our strength is growing — and we’re not waiting on shareholders to protect the workers put in harm’s way by Uber everyday. Uber’s business model has pushed drivers into dangerous working conditions for too long, and drivers have had enough. Drivers are organizing. They’re breaking down all of the barriers thrown at them. And together, they are becoming a force that Uber will not be able to ignore.
