Law Enforcement News Man Shot While Trying To Break Up Fight Outside Hollywood Restaurant A 42-year-old man is hospitalized in intensive care after trying to help a stranger who was being attacked outside a popular Hollywood restaurant following a Cinco de Mayo celebration. The incident occurred at around 2 a.m. Saturday morning outside El Compadre Mexican restaurant in the 7400 block of Sunset Boulevard. “We were cleaning things up, putting our equipment away for the night and these two cars pull up, looked like they were already having an altercation,” Jorge Ramirez-Galdamez, an artistic events creator who had been hired by the restaurant, told KTLA. As he was wrapping things up on the back patio, he said the argument between the two groups started to escalate. “This guy came out of the backseat, ran to the other vehicle and through the window, while the window was down, proceeded to punch this woman repeatedly and then continued to open the door and punch her while she was unconscious,” Ramirez-Galdamez said. According to police, a 27-year-old man and a woman were sitting inside the Bentley, parked in a driveway at an apartment complex about a block from the 101 Freeway. They were waiting to pick up a friend, police said. The suspect approached the driver's side window with a gun and began demanding money and jewelry, police said. That's when the driver put the Bentley in reverse in an effort to get away but ended up hitting a red vehicle that was heading southbound on Coldwater Canyon. The driver of that red car was a woman in her 70s who ended up being sent to the hospital. She reported having only minor pain. A nearby parked vehicle was also hit in the collision. The LAPD said the suspect shot at the Bentley twice before taking off but no one was injured. The suspect was then picked up by someone driving a dark-colored sedan and remains on the run. Wild video showed the Mustang pausing for a short moment as an unidentified woman is seen in the street, telling people to call 911. "Get back in your car ma'am, he's gonna hit you," someone is heard saying. That's when the Mustang slammed into the driver's side of the box truck in which the person recording the video was inside. FOX 11 Judge Rejects Motion For New Trial In Rapper Tory Lanez Case A Los Angeles judge Tuesday rejected a bid for a new trial for jailed rapper Tory Lanez, who was convicted of shooting hip-hop star Megan Thee Stallion in the feet three years ago in the Hollywood Hills. Lanez current attorney, Jose Baez — who famously won an acquittal for Casey Anthony — argued Monday that procedural errors, prosecutorial misconduct, discovery violations and ineffective counsel led to his client’s conviction in December on one felony count each of assault with a semiautomatic firearm, having a loaded unregistered firearm in a vehicle, and discharging a firearm with gross negligence. But back in court on Tuesday, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge David Herriford denied the motion for a new trial. “The court finds no error, prosecutorial misconduct or newly discovered evidence,” Herriford said. “Motion denied.” Sentencing for the 30-year-old Canadian rap star, whose real name is Daystar Peterson, was scheduled for June 13. Lanez is facing up to 22 years and eight months in prison. ABC 7 Health Officials Urge Monkeypox Vaccines Before LA Pride Events Los Angeles County health officials recommended Wednesday that people at high risk for monkeypox get fully vaccinated before upcoming gay pride events. “While there have been only three confirmed new mpox cases reported since March 1 in Los Angeles County, the recently reported cluster of at least 14 mpox cases in the Chicago area highlights the high potential for mpox resurgence locally,'' according to the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health. The department "strongly" recommended that those at higher risk get fully vaccinated with two doses of the mpox vaccine for maximum protection against severe illness. Monkeypox -- or mpox, as it is commonly referred to in the medical and research community -- is mainly spread through direct skin-to-skin contact with an infected person during intimate physical contact or sex. However, officials noted that the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has determined that some infected people who have no symptoms can still spread the infection up to four days before they develop symptoms. NBC 4 COVID Global Health Emergency Is Officially Ending, WHO Says, But Warns Virus Remains A Risk The World Health Organization announced Friday it would declare an end to the global COVID-19 emergency, urging countries to begin transitioning their response to a virus that it warns still remains a global health threat. "The worst thing any country could do now is to use this news as a reason to let down its guard, to dismantle the systems it has built, or to send the message to its people that COVID-19 is nothing to worry about," Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the WHO's director-general, told reporters Friday. WHO's move follows a meeting of the United Nations agency's emergency committee Thursday, more than three years after the panel had first recommended in 2020 that the WHO declare an emergency over the outbreak in China. Several nations have already ended their own national COVID-19 emergencies, or plan to do so soon. CBS 2 Local Government News City Councilwoman Hernandez Pushes For Redevelopment Of Lincoln Heights Jail For Housing Los Angeles City Councilwoman Eunisses Hernandez introduced a motion today seeking a report on the feasibility of rehabilitating the site of the former Lincoln Heights Jail for affordable housing and mixed- use development to serve the surrounding neighborhood. The jail located at 401 N. Avenue 19 has been vacant since 2014, according to Hernandez's motion. It was originally built in the 1930s to hold 625 people but quickly became overpopulated and ultimately held nearly 2,800 people by mid-century. The city and county of Los Angeles decommissioned the jail in 1965 due to overcrowding and the cost of maintenance. "The Lincoln Heights Jail is a physical embodiment of the criminalization and discrimination that has impacted generations of residents in Northeast L.A.," said Hernandez, who represents the First District, where the jail is located. "This parcel of land is sitting vacant and almost entirely unused in the middle of a neighborhood with an unprecedented need for deeply affordable housing, community resources and economic development. My office will be leading the charge to finally demolish this jail and rehabilitate the land for use that will serve Lincoln Heights and the broader Northeast LA community."
