Friend, if we don’t work to change our agriculture practices now, our farms will become more and more at risk of collapse from the oncoming climate crisis.
Unsustainable farming practices cause long-term damage to soil health, leaving fields much more vulnerable to storms, extreme heat, extreme cold, droughts, and floods than sustainable practices like those that promote diverse crop rotations, prioritize pollinator and surrounding ecosystem health, and reduce overuse of pesticides and fertilizers.
A collapsing agricultural system would disproportionately harm Black and Brown communities, many of whom already reside in systemic food deserts. This issue is not just one that concerns our environment; it is an issue of justice.
But like many other climate justice issues, transforming our agricultural system is possible only with bold, large-scale policy change.
Friend, read our latest EnviroVoters blog post to learn about the little progress California has made in passing transformative sustainable agriculture policy, and the many steps we're hopeful we can take in the next few years to change that.
Thank you for staying informed.
