Friend,
We’re entering into a new golden-age for the American labor movement. Union election petitions rose by 53 percent between October 2021 and September 2022. Workers at companies like Starbucks and Amazon are unionizing in droves. Graduate student workers throughout the US have been striking and demanding fair compensation and benefits from their universities. And Gen Z is the most pro-union generation to date.
But we can’t just sit back and let union organizers do the hard work. We need to step up and stand with them. We need to support workers who choose to form unions, ensure that corporations allow free and fair union elections, and demand that union workers are not retaliated against by Big Business. We can start by demanding that the Senate pass the Protecting the Right to Organize (PRO) Act. Introduced by Senator Bernie Sanders, this bill is designed to strengthen collective bargaining rights and hold corporations accountable for violating workers' rights.
Tell the U.S. Senate: Pass the PRO Act! |
I have proudly stood with unions throughout my career, helping the United Auto Workers (UAW) secure federal worker retraining grants and fighting for fair contracts and labor practices with the Service Employees International Union (SEIU). While serving in the Department of Commerce during the Obama administration, I pushed to give labor unions a stronger voice in influencing economic policy. And this past week, I joined demonstrators outside Netflix’s New York headquarters in support of the Writers Guild of America as they strike for fair pay and job security.
