Dear Ward 8 Residents,

This week, we recognize and celebrate individuals leading in two great professions that profoundly impact our society –teachers and nurses. Teacher Appreciation Week overlaps with National Nurses Week from May 6th to May 12th, providing our country with a full week to appreciate the sacrifices and contributions of great teachers and nurses alike.

Teachers are one of the most important resources we can provide to students. Great teachers foster curiosity and creativity. They help to shape our society and mold the leaders that rise from their classrooms. They are often the first to report changes in our children as they see them daily growing and learning in front of their peers. They help to cultivate environments that push them to critically think and imagine.

We know that nurses have historically focused on improving the lives of diverse communities through education, prevention, and treatment.They were on the frontlines during the Covid-19 pandemic providing direct care to those most vulnerable.

Teachers and nurses are the backbone of our society. Without people working in these professions, our nation would operate at a deficit. 

This week, let us continue to uplift and appreciate the hardworking nurses and teachers that shape and educate our communities and that influence our daily lives.

Last week, Special Assistant to Councilmember Trayon White, Yukia Hugee-Wilson, walked across the stage to receive her Masters in Public Administration.

UPDATES FROM THE LEGISLATIVE TEAM.
This week has been quiet for the Council: most offices and committees are preparing for the first reading of the annual budget and supporting legislation, which is on Tuesday, May 16th.

Most notable are confirmation hearings scheduled for two important positions: the Committee on Housing held a resolution confirming  Colleen Green to the Directorship of the Department of Housing and Community Development, and the Committee on the Judiciary held a hearing on a resolution confirming Lindsey Appiah to be the next Deputy Mayor for Public Safety and Justice. 
UPDATES FROM THE COMMITTEE ON RECREATION, LIBRARIES AND YOUTH AFFAIRS.
Budget season like Christmas comes around each year. And, just like the holiday season there is much preparation before celebration and the ultimate unwind and reprieve until the following year. Similarly, Councilmember White has been working diligently to ensure that Ward 8 priorities are at the fore of any FY24 budget. Additionally, his Committee on Recreation, Libraries and Youth Affairs is coordinating tasks that provide for the optimal functioning of and services provided by agencies under its purview. 

Next week, during the Committee of the Whole meeting of the Council, each priority submitted by councilmembers and accepted by the Chairman will be presented for consideration. Any budget requests that are not a part of the Chairman’s proposed budget can still be presented at the following legislative meeting. So, like Christmas Eve, we are trimming the tree and baking the pies in anticipation of a celebration- in this case- of our budget victories.

Management for Congress Park Offers Credit Monitoring for Compromised Files.

It was alleged that files were sitting in a vacant laundry room in the Congress Park (Southeast Washington Development Associates LP) community unattended and door open for over two months. These files consisted of copies of birth certificates, bank statements, social security cards, etc.

CM Trayon White, Tenant Association President McBroom, and community members responded to the property to see residents' sensitive files scattered on the floor. In addition, several residents previously complained about ongoing unaddressed housing conditions.

CM White spoke to the owner and met with the regional manager the same day. Since then, Urban Atlantic (Part-Owner) (formerly run by Edgewood Management )responded with a clean-up crew and professional shredder company. In addition, management is offering credit monitoring and repair services to residents whose credit/identity was compromised. 

Regional management explained that they understand the severity of the mishap and are working diligently to correct these issues. Residents should call 202-574-4633 if they have any concerns.

Flowers By Alexes opens its doors for a grand re-opening
May 6, 2023

Councilmember Trayon White celebrated Small Business Week with the Department of Small and Local Businesses at the grand re-opening of Flowers by Alexes in Petworth. 

Flowers by Alexes is a family business, created by Alexes father, Bernard Haggins. Following Mr. Haggins death, the shop had to close its doors in 2003.

 "After 20 years, Alexes Haggins re-opened her family’s legacy business flower shop, Flowers by Alexes, at 851 Upshur Street, just up the street from the original location. For the past year she has been supplying the neighborhood with flowers and bouquets, but just last month she was able to open up her shop to the public," cited PetworthNews.org.

Community Garden at 4600 Livingston Road SE
May 5, 2023

Councilmember White's Constituent Service Team visited the community garden on Livingston Road SE. The community-led garden operates in partnership with the University of the District of Columbia. Master Gardeners from UDC host workshops to demonstrate how to plant and maintain the garden.
