Dear John,

I’m writing to alert you to the far right’s escalating work to derail ESG investing in general and demonize As You Sow in particular. And today,
we are asking for your help.

The latest attack is coming from the Attorneys General of 21 red states. They just wrote a letter to major asset managers like BlackRock and Vanguard telling them to stop acting as though the future of the planet mattered. The letter mentions As You Sow an astounding 38 times!

The right is reacting to shareholders’ success in holding corporations accountable. They’re reacting to As You Sow’s impact specifically. They are afraid of progress, and they clearly see us as a threat.

A gift will support the work that so upsets them. It will give us the resources to counter this risk-creating, anti-ESG crusade.

As a close friend to As You Sow, you understand better than most what we’re working to accomplish. There’s been a low-level murmur of anti-ESG sentiment from the right for years. But the messaging dramatically ratcheted up, was labeled “anti-ESG,” and for the first time includes a broad range of actions intended to destroy ESG investing and derail corporate progress on climate and social justice.

The AGs’ letter argues that any attention to achieving the most basic of climate actions violates the asset managers’ fiduciary duty. It accuses asset managers of potential illegality for encouraging banks and insurance companies to stop financing and insuring fossil fuels. It attacks the entire concept of any environmental, social, or governance (ESG) consideration in investment decisions.

We must show them that no amount of noise, no matter how loud or well-funded, can derail the critical role of ESG in investment decision making.
Support As You Sow today and use your voice to protect progress on the issues that affect each of us. You can help make safe and just investing possible for all.

If you have any questions or would like to discuss these attacks in depth, let’s schedule a time to connect. I’d love to talk. And, as always, thank you for your continued support!

For the future,
