With Mother’s Day coming up this weekend, I want to share with you some important — and challenging — facts about maternal health in our community:

Maternal mortality rates in the U.S. are the highest among developed nations, and the Philadelphia region’s pregnancy-related death rate is even higher than the national average.

The situation is more dire for Black mothers, who are three to four times more likely to die of pregnancy-related complications than white mothers.

This is unacceptable. John, we must do more to prevent these deaths and improve access to equitable healthcare. In honor of Mother’s Day, join me by instantly adding your name to demand action on maternal health.

In Congress, I’m doing everything in my power to improve childbirth and maternal health outcomes, including as a member of the Black Maternal Health Caucus. This year, we were able to secure federal funding to open the Southwest Philadelphia Birth Center — the first of its kind in Philadelphia — to focus on midwifery-guided care.

As you get ready to celebrate the moms in your life, take action and add your name instantly to support improving maternal health care.

This Mother’s Day, let’s challenge ourselves to do more for moms and their babies.

With gratitude,

Mary Gay
