The Murder of Shireen Abu Akleh was a Deliberate Crime by Israeli Forces Dear Email, Today marks the one-year anniversary of the tragic murder of Palestinian-American journalist Shireen Abu Akleh by an Israeli sniper. As we honor her memory, it's important to note that there has been no real accountability for her killing, despite overwhelming evidence pointing to Israeli forces. The case of Shireen Abu Akleh is not an isolated incident but rather a part of a pattern of systemic failures in Israel's accountability for the deaths of journalists covering the region. A recent report from the New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) analyzed the cases of 20 journalists whose deaths have been attributed to the Israel forces since 2001, including Shireen Abu Akleh. The report highlighted a standard playbook used by Israel, involving preemptive denials of responsibility, discounting contrary evidence and witness testimony, and opaque internal investigations that never led to charges. We join the international community in demanding justice for Shireen Abu Akleh and all other journalists who have lost their lives while reporting on the occupation of Palestine. We call upon the US government and the international community to take the following actions: - Make accountability for Shireen Abu Akleh's murder a priority in diplomatic relations with Israel;
- Investigate if US military aid contributed to this crime, and make the FBI and other investigation findings public.
Shireen Abu Akleh's case demonstrates that the lack of accountability for journalist killings in Israel and the West Bank is unacceptable. We must honor her memory by continuing to demand justice and accountability for her murder and for all journalists who have lost their lives in the line of duty. |
