Friend,
Right now, over 60,000 men, women, and children are living in dangerous, inhumane conditions on the Mexican border while the United States government denies their right to seek asylum on U.S. soil.
This is a horrific human rights violation — and that’s why advocates from across the country, including myself, went to witness the immigration courts in San Diego and San Antonio, as well as the tent courts in Brownsville and Laredo, to bring much-needed attention to the policies driving this humanitarian crisis.
Witness the demonstrations at immigration courts at the border for yourself, and leave a comment demanding the government end this policy and #RestoreAsylumNow.
Last week marked one year since the Trump Administration’s Migrant Protection Protocols, otherwise known as the “Remain in Mexico” policy, went into effect. This policy has continuously separated and denied entry to thousands of families seeking asylum.
To make matters worse, once these asylum seekers get their day in court, the United States is violating their right to due process by blocking lawyers from meeting with their clients, and intermittently blocking legal advocates from monitoring the border tent courts where asylum seekers are pleading their cases every day.
And just last week, the Department of Homeland Security announced that they will be expanding the “Remain in Mexico” policy, putting countless future asylum seekers at risk. This cannot stand.
Asylum seekers are enduring violence, children are being kidnapped, and families are still being torn apart. None of us can stay silent while our government commits such despicable acts.
By enforcing the “Remain in Mexico” policy, our government is putting thousands of people at risk and violating international human rights law. Take a look at some of the photos from the demonstrations at immigration courts, and leave a comment urging the government to #RestoreAsylumNow.
The crisis at the border will continue to grow unless we stand together to demand urgent action to restore asylum immediately.
Thank you for standing with asylum seekers today,
Juan Escalante
