We did it. Coal mining at Ffos y Fran – the UK's largest opencast mine – is finally going to stop.
Dear John
We did it. Coal mining at Ffos y Fran – the UK's largest opencast mine – is finally going to stop.
After years of tireless campaigning by local residents, councillors have rejected plans to extend the life of the mine. We're really proud that our local group in Merthyr has been right at the heart of the campaign. Well done Merthyr Tydfil Friends of the Earth and all the other campaign groups involved!
This is a massive win for the climate and a local community blighted by noise and air pollution. And like everything we do, it was only possible with your support.
With your help, we'll be able to keep fighting against fossil fuel developments. From more coal mines in Wales and Cumbria, to the oil drilling site at Horse Hill, Surrey.
If you can, will you chip in to support our vital work to end new coal, oil and gas projects?

Because of this decision, mining at Ffos Y Fran must be stopped immediately and the mine restored by the owner as soon as possible [1].
Councillors said that "no local or community benefits would be provided that clearly outweigh the disadvantages of the lasting environmental harm of the development."
For the local community who have been putting up with noise and air pollution for years, this has come as a huge relief.
The council's decision also sends a clear message that coal mining goes against Wales’ climate policies. Which will help some of the other local campaigns we’re supporting.
Your donation today can help us in lots of ways:
* Mount legal cases against coal, oil or gas developments.
* Support local campaigns like the one at Ffos Y Fran.
* Campaign for clean alternatives to fossil fuels.

Whether you’re able to donate or not, thanks for your ongoing support. It helps keep us and people like the amazing campaigners in Merthyr going.
Best wishes,
Haf
