STATE OF THE UNION: Joe Trippi, a respected campaign strategist and senior advisor at The Lincoln Project, has shared his perspective on freedom in America today. As we near Memorial Day, it is a timely reminder of the grave threats our country faces. Yes, the MAGA-extremists are still doing crazy. But they are also organized and dangerous and seem hell-bent on a crusade to dismantle the very foundation of our Republic. It will take all of us doing the hard work together to stop them.

THE PLAYBOOK: Victor Shi, strategy director of Voters of Tomorrow, said on Resolute Square that, “young voters will account for the largest voting bloc of any age demographic in 2024.” He’s right. These critical voters want to be engaged in meaningful ways. They want to be heard and understood, not just talked to.

THE PULSE: Chaos continues to dominate Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s so-called leadership strategy in Congress. The budget cuts that vulnerable Republican representatives recently voted for have improved the chances of restoring a pro-democracy majority to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2024. There are 18 Republican representatives in Congress whose districts voted for Biden in 2020. We must inform these voters about the harm their representatives want to cause.

Holding Americans hostage: Speaker McCarthy showed up at a meeting with President Biden yesterday with a ransom letter to raise the nation’s debt ceiling. The demand? Agree to draconian cuts on future spending or they’ll refuse to pay the debts the government already owes. They are playing a reckless hypocritical game that would cause catastrophically cruel financial harm to tens of millions of Americans.

A battle for the soul of America: Columnist David Brooks, in a sobering description of today’s political landscape, strips away Donald Trump’s grievances and reveals what is at stake in the 2024 election. Brooks writes that “the contest between Biden and Trumpism is less Democrat versus Republican or liberal versus conservative than it is between an essentially moral vision and an essentially amoral one, a contest between decency and its opposite.”
