Folks,
Here’s my impression of the news recently:
Tragic mass shooting. Thoughts and prayers. Republican inaction. Another tragic mass shooting. Mourn for the victims and families. More Republican inaction. Yet another tragic mass shooting. And on and on it goes.
How did we get to the point where even bi-weekly mass shootings can’t draw out a modicum of compassion or concern from our leaders on the right?
It’s simple. Radical right-wing federal courts and a filthy-rich, regulation-averse gun manufacturers lobby have dragged us all, kicking and screaming, past the point of no return.
Here’s how their symbiotic relationship works:
First, the gun lobby spends millions on crusades against sensible gun laws, convinces voters that Democrats are out to steal their guns, and elects gun extremists to every level of government from School Boards to Congress.
Then, if state or federal leaders do manage to take meaningful action on gun violence despite all of these manufactured obstacles, some far-right organization or another immediately files a bogus lawsuit against them.
Finally, that lawsuit ends up in the federal courts, where Republican-appointed right-wing justices can swoop in to guard the gun lobby’s financial interests.
It’s this vicious cycle that forces students to learn to hide under their desks when they should be learning science, math, and history.
It’s this vicious cycle of fear that we’ve all unfortunately learned to live with because doing something about it might hurt the gun industry's bottom line.
Folks, we must hold the weapons industry, the NRA, and their puppet politicians accountable for their deadly greed.
Please, I’m imploring you to add your name and demand that the GOP stop playing politics while people suffer and enact common-sense gun legislation immediately.
Thank you for standing for reason and compassion. Folks like you are exactly who I want by my side.
With gratitude,
Sean
