After being exposed as a conman and a grifter, George Santos' lies finally caught up with him in a far-reaching 13-count indictment. Santos was placed in custody earlier today and is expected to be formally arraigned in the near future.
This comes after months of investigations probing Santos' campaign and financial affairs. Since being elected last year, Santos was found to have fabricated most of his life story, work history, education, and much more.
More recently, it has been alleged that Santos took unemployment benefits during the pandemic while still working at an investment firm making $120,000 annually — while co-sponsoring a bill that would help states recover fraudulent COVID unemployment benefits. This revelation comes as Santos is currently trying to demand stricter work requirements for Medicare beneficiaries.
While Speaker McCarthy is trying to block raising the debt ceiling and hold our economy hostage, a member of his caucus has been charged with wire fraud, money laundering, theft of public funds, and making materially false statements to the House. The GOP needs to look inward.
The people of New York's 3rd District deserve better. Congress deserves better. That's why today we're formally calling for George Santos' resignation from the House. His continued presence disgraces the People's House every single day he is allowed to remain in office. Rather than expel him or reprimand him for his many lies, Republicans have decided that protecting their razor thin House majority is more important than holding one of their own accountable. Unfortunately, we can't say this is surprising.
