Daily Docket — Wednesday, May 10

Tomorrow at 4:30 p.m. ET, the Washington Supreme Court will hear a challenge to the state's voting rights act. For more about how this case made it all the way to Washington's highest court, read our latest Case Watch. [link removed]

Here are some updates from today and yesterday.

Today, the Ohio House approved a proposed amendment to the Ohio Constitution that would increase the threshold to pass constitutional amendments from 50% to 60%. If approved by Ohio voters, the proposal would make it more difficult to amend the state constitution. ​​[link removed]

Also today, a Mississippi court held a hearing in a lawsuit challenging a law that creates a separate court system in Jackson. The judges and prosecutors would be appointed by state officials instead of elected by residents. The judge said he would try to issue a decision by Friday on whether or not to block the law as litigation moves forward. [link removed]

Yesterday, civil rights groups reached a settlement with the city of Jacksonville, Florida on districts for the city council and the Duval County School Board that better represent Black residents. Civil rights groups alleged in court that the city's original maps were racial gerrymanders. [link removed]

Here’s what to expect coming up.

Tomorrow morning, the U.S. Supreme Court will release opinions in argued cases. The Court may release decisions in any of the cases already argued this term, including one of the major elections cases, Allen v. Milligan. [link removed]

However, we do not expect a decision in Moore v. Harper, because additional briefing is due to the Court at 2 p.m. tomorrow. Once the briefing is submitted, we’ll break down everything you need to know about the messy procedural issues behind the case. [link removed]

Also tomorrow, the New Hampshire Supreme Court will hold oral argument in an appeal of a decision dismissing a lawsuit alleging that the state Senate and Executive Council districts are partisan gerrymanders. [link removed]
