John,
Yesterday’s meeting at the White House shows that some right-wing extremists in Congress are willing to bring our economy to the brink of catastrophe if their ideological demands aren’t met.
In addition to 1 million jobs lost in the first week of a default, 66 million people receiving Social Security benefits would see their monthly checks delayed. More than 2 million federal employees, plus 1.4 million active-duty military personnel would not get paid. And, each week that a default drags on would result in another million+ jobs lost.1
Fight back against right-wing hostage-taking and rush a donation today to keep the pressure on Congress to pass a clean debt ceiling increase with no cuts to health care, nutrition, housing, education, and more.

1 5 ways a debt default could affect you
-- DEBORAH'S EMAIL --
John,
Since last Friday, CHN and our allies have sent more than 45,000 letters to senators demanding they pass a clean debt ceiling increase without cuts to programs for working people and vulnerable communities. But even as congressional leadership meets today at the White House to discuss the debt ceiling impasse, 43 Senate Republicans have penned a letter to Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, indicating their willingness to push the U.S. to the brink of default over their ideological demands for damaging cuts.1
With just 6 Senate Republicans seemingly willing to pass a clean debt ceiling increase, we still need 3 more in order to override a filibuster. If we’re unsuccessful, the right-wing could plunge us into an immediate recession resulting in the loss of 1 million jobs in just the first week of a default.2
Rush a donation today to keep the pressure on Congress to reject right-wing hostage- taking and demand a clean debt ceiling increase.

At the same time as we’re contacting senators, members of the House are working on a parallel track, attempting a discharge petition, which requires a majority of representatives to bypass the Speaker and bring a bill to a vote. They need 5 moderate Republicans to join all Democrats. And this is possible.
Reporting by Axios this past weekend indicates that several House Republican moderates are getting uncomfortable with Speaker McCarthy’s stance on the debt limit, calling his bill “a fairy tale” and “not real.”3
Donate today to keep the pressure on Congress to avoid economic disaster and pass a clean debt ceiling increase without draconian cuts that will hurt all of us now and for years to come.
