Jack, every day, we have another mass shooting in this country that cries for the need for reform. And for decades, right-wing politicians have done nothing.

But this week in Texas, 2 Republicans joined all Democrats on a state legislative committee to move a bill to restrict access to assault rifles. This was after family members who had lost loved ones in the Ulvade and Allen shootings came to the state Capitol to demand change.

And in Tennessee, the Republican governor will call a special session of the state legislature to take on a gun safety bill. The same legislature who adjourned without taking action on guns after a mass shooting, but voted to expel two Democratic colleagues who demanded reform.

Real progress on gun safety reform is still a long-shot. But if we can start getting movement in these red states, now is the time to redouble our efforts. We must put pressure on Congress to ensure change happens.

Jack, another day, another mass shooting. We can no longer tolerate more senseless loss of life. We must pressure Congress to take action.

It can often feel hopeless, with so many politicians controlled by the gun lobby, that even the most basic gun laws fail to pass. But this week in Texas, we got some hopeful news.

On May 8, shortly after the Allen mall shooting, a bill in the Texas state legislature to raise the minimum age to buy semi-automatic rifles passed out of committee—when two Republicans voted with all Democrats on the panel to advance the bill to the Texas House floor.

This was a rare victory in Texas, and a hopeful sign that the wave of mass shootings can finally push legislators to say "enough." There might be some federal action, too. In Washington DC, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer has called a special meeting of Senate Democrats to move gun safety legislation.

Now is the time to redouble our efforts, and demand change. We need gun safety legislation.
