John, I’ve got good news and bad news about our work to permanently protect the Boundary Waters.
First, the bad news: U.S. Representative Pete Stauber introduced legislation just last week that would REVERSE the Biden Administration's 20-year mining ban within the headwaters of the Boundary Waters and Voyageur National Park. This legislation would be a devastating setback in the fight to permanently protect America’s most visited Wilderness and sets a dangerous precedent for our nation’s special places.
Here’s the good news: Because of Save the Boundary Waters’ supporters (like you!), we have made significant progress to protect the Wilderness at the state level: just this week Minnesota Republican Senator Abeler introduced the Boundary Waters Permanent Protection Bill in the Minnesota legislature which is a clone bill of the legislation introduced by Minnesota Senator Kelly Morrison in January. We now have a bipartisan coalition of state legislators! This new legislation will permanently protect state-owned lands in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness from sulfide-ore copper mining.
But, the fight to permanently protect the Boundary Waters from sulfide-ore copper mining takes both federal and state level protections: we must make the Boundary Waters a forever Wilderness by pushing for permanent protection of this beloved landscape.
