John, Common Cause has been fighting for our democracy for over 50 years now. And we’ve had some spectacular successes.
Back in 1971, Common Cause led the campaign that won the 26th amendment to the U.S. Constitution, allowing 18 year-olds to vote.
In 1972, we sued President Richard Nixon’s campaign for hiding donors, and our case was a key step in unfolding the Watergate scandal – forcing Nixon’s resignation, and ushering in an era of common sense reforms to check money’s influence on politics.
And more recently, Common Cause was the one who alerted authorities that Donald Trump’s hush money payment to Stormy Daniels was likely illegal because it was intended to influence the election – leading to his present criminal charges.
On top of that, every election year Common Cause leads a major Election Protection push, training volunteers across the country to help voters cast their ballots safely and securely, while navigating intentionally confusing laws and voter intimidation.
These are just a few highlights of our work. And all of it has been made possible by a special group of Common Cause members – the Guardians for Democracy.
The Guardians for Democracy are Common Cause members that make small but meaningful monthly contributions that empower us to continue our work for a better democracy.
Since these gifts are made monthly, we’re able to use them to budget for longer-term and incredibly important work – like increasing transparency in our government, exposing illegal activity, and protecting our right to vote.
Knowing what funds have been committed not only helps us plan and budget, but helps us meet unplanned emergencies while ensuring Common Cause remains persistent and tenacious on the issues that affect all of us.
