We're putting pressure on the most vulnerable Republicans in the House to avert a catastrophic default on the national debt

Indivisibles,

On Sunday, Ezra shared our strategy for defeating MAGA Republicans and avoiding a default on the national debt. To read his full email, you can click here

Here’s a quick recap: MAGA Republicans are driving the country toward a catastrophic default unless Democrats agree to extreme (and totally unrelated) budget cuts that will hurt millions of Americans. So far, President Biden and (most) Democrats are standing strong and demanding Republicans pay America’s bills without preconditions. That’s the correct approach -- but with mere weeks left before a default, they need help pushing Republicans to act.

The path forward for Democrats involves a legislative action called a discharge petition. The details are long and boring but in short, if we can get just five Republicans to support the petition, then Democrats can force a bill onto the House floor that averts a default without the toxic cuts that MAGA Republicans are demanding.

To peel away the five Republican votes, we need a massive grassroots pressure campaign targeting the most vulnerable Republicans in the House -- the Unrepresentatives. That’s why we’re working to put up billboards like this one ⬇️ in target districts across the country. We’ll get into the details of our strategy below, but we’ll say here at the top that we need your help to get these billboards up ASAP. If you’re in a position to give, please chip in here.

Billboard with Rep. Mike Garcia and title that reads 'Congressman Mike Garcia is betraying the Antelope Valley'

Thanks to the polling done by our national partners, we already know the cuts the Unrepresentatives voted for are incredibly unpopular -- especially the cuts to Medicaid and education that will harm millions of seniors, kids with disabilities, teachers, and low-income students. The only problem is not enough voters know about the demands their Republican reps are making.

That’s where we come in. Local Indivisible groups have been laying the foundation for this work for months. In fact, thanks in part to their strategic work, Republicans backed off their earlier plans to cut Social Security and Medicare. Now, groups are planning even more rallies, protests, and actions to ramp up the pressure on the Unrepresentatives.

We’re adding to this work through targeted messaging like the billboard above. The first one is going up in Unrepresentative Mike Garcia’s district, CA-27. Garcia has made his military service a cornerstone of his campaigns so in addition to highlighting the cuts to Medicaid and school funding, we’re also highlighting his vote to slash veterans’ benefits.

We’re currently working with Indivisible groups in AZ-06 (Rep. Ciscomani), PA-01 (Rep. Fitzpatrick), and VA-02 (Rep. Kiggans) to identify the best locations for billboards in their districts, and we’ll be applying the same targeted messaging.

To pay for the billboards, we need to raise $20,000 -- and with just a few weeks until the default deadline, we need to act quickly. Pitch in today and help us get these billboards up as soon as possible.

We know the Republican demands are unpopular and we know their coalition is vulnerable. The last thing these Unrepresentatives want is for their constituents to know they’re holding the entire global economy hostage in order to get tax giveaways for the rich and harmful cuts for everyone else. It’s hard to win reelection when that’s your brand. So we’re going to hammer them on it until they relent.

If we continue to apply grassroots pressure and do the work to assert our power, we will win this fight. And with stakes this high, it’s a fight we’ve got to win. So please -- chip in if you can.

In solidarity,
